In December 2010, the biggest news story in the gambling industry was the Bellagio Bandit. The mystery robbery entered into the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas and stole $1.5 million in casino chips from a craps table. It took investigators a few weeks before they discovered who the bandit was. Anthony Carleo was the criminal accused of the crime and he has now been sentenced. Carleo entered into the Bellagio with a gun and blatantly took over one million dollars from the casino. Carleo was taken into custody and eventually pled guilty to the crime in June. He accepted a plea deal and faced a maximum sentence of eleven years for the crime commented. Carleo was given credit for the time he had already served in prison and he will now have to spend at least three more years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
Carleo is still facing additional jail time for robbing the Suncoast Hotel and Casino as well. This case was a high profile case because of the amount of money that was stolen as well as because Carleo is the son of former Judge George Assad.
Christopher Owens is the Assistant District Attorney in the case and he commented that Carleo deserved a tough sentence due to the fact that he had put people at risk because he robbed the casino. Owens also commented that Carleo showed no remorse for the crime he committed.
It will be interesting to see if Carleo will receive a stiff sentence for robbing the Suncoast Casino. The fact that he pulled off two robberies may see him earning a larger prison sentence because he acted so brazenly.
