A study was recently conducted in the state of Florida on the subject of table games coming to the southern part of the state. The study was conducted by two former revenue and policy analysts for the state and they found that if craps and other table games are available in the area it will cause more crime in the area. The study was supposedly done in a scientific manner and it found that casinos with the table games will boost car theft, robbery, burglary, prostitution, political payoffs and rape. The study predicted that if the proposed mega casinos are built then the crime rate would rise about eight to twelve percent in the state.
The study also showed that with the increase in crime rate, the cost of jails and prisons will go up which means residents will be paying more taxes. The price of this is around $3 billion and that does not include the payment to officers at the facilities as well as court costs.
Roberto Martinez a former US attorney who is a member of No Casinos, Inc., and a group against the casinos in South Florida stated that he fears corruption would take place with police and politics if the casinos were created. Martinez stated: “I think the biggest threat to our society is the massive infusion of cash into the political process by these mega groups.”
However those who are for the casino have different thoughts on the subject. “The gaming industry is here already, they’ve been here for years, and no one has documented any increase in crime in connection with the gaming industry,” said Carlos Curbelo, a spokesman for Resorts World International, which is a company that has proposed a gambling facility in Miami.
