Most sports team members are forbidden to gamble especially on their own sport. Many however are able to visit a casino from time to time especially if the team is traveling and are near a casino. However many coaches have found that if a team is allowed to visit a casino during a trip they may not be focused when game time comes. The lack of focus and inclination to get into trouble is why many teams choose to forbid their players from participating in gambling at local casinos. The Kansas Jayhawks traveled to Sin City this weekend to participate in the Las Vegas Invitational. The players have been forbidden by their coaches to participate in any gambling especially gambling on their own sport. The team has even chosen to stay off the beaten path to stay away from gambling.
The team is staying at the Renaissance Hotel which is located just off the strip to try and deter their players from wanting to visit the craps tables and throw the dice. The team understands why they cannot gamble at the casinos and how they could get into trouble if they do so.
One player Marcus Morris commented: “you get in trouble for gambling. See what happened to Michael Jordan. That’s not a good thing. I don’t want that to ever happen to me.”
Players also have to be careful as to how they talk around certain people as information they release could be used by others to place sports bets. Overall it is best for players to stay away from sports betting since it can cause controversy within the organization as well as the team itself.
