The state of Maryland is looking to add table games such as craps and blackjack to their slots parlors. There has been debate for some time now that adding the games would be morally wrong but the state now needs to add the games to bring in much needed revenue. The state is facing a budget deficit of $1.6 million dollars so they could really use the money that the table games would bring in. state lawmakers could have put the table games in when voters were able to vote for legalized gambling. Now there are at least three legislators who are considering creating bills that would issue another referendum in 2012 to hopefully add the games.
There are still lawmakers that are still opposed to the table games as they say they would like to protect their constituents from the negative aspects of gambling such as addiction. However since slot gaming is already approved it doesn’t make a huge different if table games such as craps are added as well.
The main issue is that the state is now competing with the neighboring states for gamblers. If Maryland does not offer the table games then they will not be able to compete with other states. If they do add table games then residents of the state will be able to access the games close to home instead of going to other states. It could also bring in other players from other states that may be closer to the Maryland facilities.
So in the coming weeks and months we may see legislatures in the state creating new legislation to see table games added in the state. Once legislation has been put forth then the governing bodies will have to approve them before they will become law.
